This is a birthday poem I wrote for my beloved. This represents a time when falling in love felt like vertigo.
Another Lifetime
It is not that your affection is unrequited
In this moment, my love needs to be parallel to yours
Racing toward infinity
Never touching
Like two positive magnets
Seeing you across that distance reminds me that I am flesh, present, breathing
I wonder
If we did cross that boundary
Would we ricochet into the ethers?
Fumbling and lonely through the void
Always waiting
To collide again
And I do think about it
Dreaming of you as my lover
Somewhere distant
In some vacuum
Safe from consequence
Driving fast in some strange convertible
On some strange highway
With your beautiful hand between my thighs
Coming loudly through a tunnel
Echoing in your ears
And emerging back into that bright light
Where you know my soul
Like returning home
And I belong to you
…
I digress
And I am back here
On earth
Nervous and curious
Painting your lips
Telling you
“I want to kiss you right now”
Because the rest would be too much
And we may need to save it for another lifetime
Unless…
You feel it too
